Since garages and the vehicles we put in them come in all sizes, you need to make sure the door you choose will fit your needs. There are many things to consider when determining what size garage door your garage should have. Some common options are standard, custom, commercial and RV sized garage doors.

Standard Garage Door Sizes

If you want to save money, your best bet is to stick with a standard size garage door. These are mass manufactured versus having a door custom made to your specifications. You still have many choices in sizes and types, even with a standard built door. There are single, double and even standard larger ones for recreational vehicles.

- Single garage door size

Garage Door Sizes

This is your typical garage door for one vehicle to enter. You may have a three-car garage with three single garage doors, or maybe you have one double garage door and one single garage door. The standard sizes that these come in are (ft.width x ft.height): 8×7, 9×7, 10×7, 8×8, 9×8, and 10×8. You may find other pre-manufactured options but these are fairly typical garage door sizes. Standard garage doors are generally 7 or 8 feet high.

- Double garage door sizes

These are wider doors meant for either two vehicles or to accommodate a vehicle and a boat, trailer or other recreational vehicle along side it. Some garages will just have one large double door instead of two singles as it gives you more room to maneuver when parking. The standard sizes for double or 2-car garage doors are similar to the single doors, just wider: 12×7, 14×7, 16×7, 12×8, 14×8, and 16×8.

- RV garage door sizes

A typical garage door size for an RV is going to be much taller than your average garage door size. These are meant to fit anything from travel trailers to motor homes. For most travel trailers, fifth wheels and smaller class B and C motor homes, the sizes will be 12’W x 12’H.  The larger class A motor homes will need at least 13’ clearance, so the standard size for one of those is 14’ W x 12’H. Of course, you will want to measure your RV first for height and width to make sure these standard doors will work for your vehicle.

Commercial Garage Door Sizes

For businesses that have large trucks and equipment, they need garage doors that will stand up to heavy use and be much wider than your average garage door size. Commercial garage doors are often made of sectional steel and can be insulated. They come in a variety of standard sizes, with widths up to 32 feet and heights of 24 feet. Since these are large, heavy doors, they will need commercial grade garage door openers as well.

Custom Garage Door Sizes

The great thing about custom garage doors is you can have them any size you want, but it will cost you more. There are many great garage door companies that can build you any type of garage door you want in any size you want. Just be prepared to pay more than you would for standard garage door sizes.

Measuring Garage Door Size

Whether you are buying a replacement garage door or a door for your new garage, you will need to know how and what to measure to get the right dimensions. For replacing an existing door, it should be simple. You can measure the existing door and you have your dimensions. One thing to keep in mind though is that your new garage door may have new parts and technology that is different than your old garage door. This means you may be replacing more than just the door itself.

If you are framing in a new garage door yourself and want to know what garage door size you need to order, here is what you need. To get garage door sizes, rough opening of the door needs to be measured. This is height and width, after frame is added. Keep in mind that for overhead doors, you need room for the frame and for the door to go up. Typically, you will need 15”-18” of headroom (space between top of rough opening to ceiling) for 7’ or 8’ doors. You also need back clearance for the door when it is fully raised to ceiling, which is 4’ plus the height of the door.

Whether you are looking for standard garage door sizes or wanting a commercial or custom garage door size, there are plenty of options to choose from. Along with the door itself, there are also a variety of garage door opener sizes as well. With such a variety available, you should be able to find one that will be the right size for your garage.
